Rep. Scavello Comments on Governor's Budget Address - 2/7/2012
Holding the line on state spending was the theme of Governor Corbett’s budget address delivered Tuesday before a joint session of the General Assembly in Harrisburg. The $27.1 billion spending plan is actually a small reduction in spending from last year and includes efforts to clamp down on budget growth and control administrative spending while ensuring no new tax increases. Rep. Mario Scavello (R-Monroe) said he is most concerned with basic and higher education funding in this year’s fiscal plan. Chuck Nichols Reports - Story and Bite available.

The Pennsylvania House approved a $27.15 billion state budget Wednesday in Harrisburg, that cuts state spending, holds the line on taxes, and gives the state its first on-time spending plan in 8 years. Rep. Mario Scavello (R-Monroe) said he was glad to see an on-time budget that will force state government stretch resources and do more with less. Mike Davies Reports – Story and Bite available.

Legislation banning the sale of “bath salts” and other synthetic look-alike drugs has been signed by Governor Corbett. Rep. Mike Davies Reports – Story and Bite available.
Rep. Scavello Comments on House Passage of the State Budget Plan - 5/25/2011
The Pennsylvania House approved its version of the state budget Tuesday in Harrisburg. The $27.3 billion budget plan includes no new or increased taxes and stays within spending limits set by Governor Corbett earlier this year. Rep. Mario Scavello (R-Monroe) said this year’s seemingly austere budget is the direct result of the loss of temporary federal stimulus funding for schools and other state supported programs. Mike Davies reports... story and bite available.
Rep. Mario Scavello Comments on State System of Higher Education Rally - 3/29/2011
Thousands of students from Pennsylvania's state-owned universities took their message to Harrisburg this week, calling for changes to the Governor's proposed budget that would significantly reduce state support for higher education. A number of lawmakers voiced their support for maintaining funding for the State System of Higher Education schools, including Rep. Mario Scavello (R-Monroe), a member of the House Appropriations Committee, who has a state system school in his district. Chuck Nichols Reports - Story and Bite available.
Rep. Mario Scavello Comments on Governor's Budget Proposal - 3/9/2011
Governor Corbett delivered his first budget address before a joint session of the House and Senate Tuesday in Harrisburg, laying out a 27.3 billion dollar plan that represents an overall 3.1% reduction in state spending. Rep. Mario Scavello (R-Monroe) lauded the straight-forwardness and transparency of the Governor’s budget proposal. Chuck Nichols Reports – Story and Bite available.
Rep. Scavello Comments on Appropriations Hearings on Budget Cuts - 2/3/2011
The House Appropriations Committee, in an effort to get a head start on the budget, held a series of hearings this week to gather information on how other states are tackling their financial issues. Rep. Mario Scavello (R-Monroe) said underperforming programs must be examined for cuts, but tax increases are not a viable option. Chuck Nichols Reports - Story and Bite available.
Rep. Scavello Comments on Effects of New Education Funding Formula on Monroe and Pike County Schools - 8/25/2010
The updated funding formula used to calculate how much money the state appropriates to each school district is reported to have had a negative impact on school districts in the Pocono area. Records indicate that the new system, developed from a statewide costing-out study, may have cost local taxpayers between 10 and 25 million dollars more than the previous education funding formula. Rep. Mario Scavello (R-Monroe) said that despite claims that the system would be more fair and equitable, residents have been asked to pay more than their fair share of increased education costs. Chuck Nichols Reports - Story and Bite available.
Rep. Scavello Comments on Passage of State Budget - 7/1/2010
The Pennsylvania House has passed an on-time state budget for the upcoming fiscal year and lawmakers offered their assessments of the $28 billion compromise spending plan. Rep. Mario Scavello (R-Monroe) said he could not support this budget because it will leave the state in a precarious financial position in the future. Chuck Nichols Reports - Story and Bite available.
Rep. Scavello Comments on Transportation Funding Challenges at Opening of Special Session - 5/5/2010
Transportation funding will be the topic of a special session of the state legislature, with Governor Rendell addressing lawmakers on Tuesday to lay out some of the options Pennsylvania faces to fill the $2 billion revenue hole created by the failure of the I-80 tolling plan. Rep. Mario Scavello (R-Monroe) said he feels one of the problems is that the Rendell administration places too much emphasis on channeling funding to mass transit systems in Pennsylvania’s big cities without asking cities to bear their fair share of the cost.
